Masjid al-Aqsa: A Jewel of Faith, A Beacon of Hope In the heart of the ancient city of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) lies a sanctuary of profound spiritual significance: Masjid al-Aqsa. More than just a magnificent structure, it is a cornerstone of Islamic faith, a symbol of resilience, and a land blessed by Allah for all of humanity. For many Muslims around the world, the connection to Masjid al-Aqsa is deep-rooted, yet its full virtues are sometimes overlooked. Let us journey together to understand why this sacred site holds such an esteemed place in our hearts and history. 1. The “Farthest Mosque”: The Site of the Night Journey (Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj) The greatest virtue of Masjid al-Aqsa is its central role in the miraculous Night Journey of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). As mentioned in the Holy Quran: “Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:1) This event, known as Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj, was a profound miracle. In a single night, the Prophet (ﷺ) was transported from Makkah to Jerusalem, and from there, he ascended through the heavens. This journey established Masjid al-Aqsa as the third holiest site in Islam, after the Kaaba in Makkah and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. It is the only mosque mentioned by name in the Quran besides the Kaaba. The First Qibla: The Original Direction of Prayer Before the commandment to turn towards the Kaaba in Makkah, Muslims prayed facing Bayt al-Maqdis (the area encompassing Masjid al-Aqsa) in Jerusalem. For approximately 16 to 17 months after the migration to Madinah, it served as the Qibla for the Muslim community. This established a direct link in worship between the three holy mosques and signifies the continuity of the message of Islam from the earlier prophets. 3. A Land Blessed by Allah The Quran itself describes the land surrounding Masjid al-Aqsa as blessed (mubarak). This blessing is multifaceted—spiritual, historical, and environmental. It is a land where prophets walked, preached, and lived. From Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to Prophet Sulaiman (AS), Dawud (AS), and Isa (Jesus, AS), countless messengers of Allah are associated with this sacred ground. Praying there is an act of worship immersed in this rich history of divine guidance. 4. A Place of Immense Reward for Prayer The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Do not set out on a journey except for three Mosques: al-Masjid al-Haram (in Makkah), my Mosque (in Madinah), and al-Masjid al-Aqsa (in Jerusalem).” (Sahih al-Bukhari) This famous hadith highlights the unique status of Masjid al-Aqsa. Praying within its walls carries immense reward, equivalent to 500 times the reward of prayers offered in an ordinary mosque (except for the Haram in Makkah, where one prayer is 100,000 times, and the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, where it is 1,000 times). 5. A Mosque Steeped in Prophetic History Masjid al-Aqsa is not a single building but a compound known as Al-Haram al-Sharif (The Noble Sanctuary). This entire area is considered sacred. It was here that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) led all the previous prophets in prayer during the Night Journey, symbolizing his leadership and the finality of his prophethood. The Dome of the Rock, often mistaken for Masjid al-Aqsa itself, is the magnificent golden-domed structure that marks the spot from which the Prophet (ﷺ) ascended to the heavens. Our Responsibility Towards Masjid al-Aqsa Understanding these virtues is not just about historical appreciation; it carries a responsibility. · Spiritual Connection: We must revive our connection to this holy site through prayer, remembrance, and learning about its history.· Dua (Supplication): We should regularly make dua for the protection, peace, and liberation of Masjid al-Aqsa and its people.· Awareness and Support: In an age of misinformation, it is our duty to educate ourselves and others about its true Islamic significance and to support its cause with wisdom and compassion.
